Iran University of Science & Technology

overview

The Iran University of Science and Technology (IUST) is one of the first industrial and public universities in Iran, initially established in 1929 during the reign of Reza Shah. Originally a German school founded in Tehran during the Qajar era, it received a monthly subsidy of 1,000 toman from the Iranian government. This school was closed during World War I but reopened in 1921 after the National Consultative Assembly approved an annual grant of 12,000 toman. The Ministry of Education negotiated with the German Embassy to transform the German school into an industrial school, setting a foundation for opportunities to study in Iran for both domestic and international students in Iran.

Before the Islamic Revolution, IUST was a leading institution for training engineers and technologists in various fields such as electrical, mechanical, chemical, and materials engineering. After the revolution, the university adapted to the changes while maintaining its reputation as a prestigious educational center. Today, with over 10,000 students and renowned faculty members, IUST is recognized as one of Iran's top universities, particularly in fields like mechanical and electrical engineering, continuing to attract international students in Iran who seek to study in Iran at a globally respected institution.

In recent years, various universities have begun offering degree programs in the Kish Free Zone. To address the lack of technology-focused initiatives in the region, IUST established an international campus there in 2018. The campus aims to leverage international collaborations and promote entrepreneurship in advanced technologies. Notable projects undertaken by IUST include:

  • Designing the Navid and Zafar satellites.
  • Developing the National Cyber Defense Shield project.
  • Designing jet engine components.
  • Creating a Class B national automobile platform.

IUST fosters student capabilities through joint programs with renowned universities and research centers worldwide. These include joint graduate programs, international conferences, faculty and student exchanges, and online courses with foreign universities. IUST collaborates with the following institutions:

  • Technical University of Berlin (Germany)
  • Polytechnic University of Milan (Italy)
  • Deakin University (Australia)
  • Kagoshima University (Japan)
  • National Metallurgical Academy of Ukraine
  • Sudan University of Science and Technology
  • University of Turin (Italy)
  • Simon Fraser University (Canada)
  • Kazan State University of Architecture and Engineering (Russia)

It is worth noting that Doctoral program applicants who lack a Persian language proficiency certificate but possess adequate English language proficiency can also register for the Doctoral program by submitting a valid English language proficiency certificate. For these students, classes and other educational processes will be conducted in English.

However, if the university determines that such students do not meet the minimum required level of English proficiency, they will be required to successfully complete an English language remedial course as a compensatory subject. Furthermore, these students must present a Persian language proficiency certificate (AFA level, introductory) within the first academic year. This requirement ensures that those who choose to study in Iran, including international students in Iran, can integrate effectively into the academic environment.
